Talking Non-American Science Fiction

Science fiction has long been a tool for cultures to envision how they would evolve and examine and comment upon contemporary issues. As I consumed more science fiction in various forms of media and met other authors, I began to appreciate the differences and similarities of foreign science fiction.

Motivated to learn more, I am contacting non-American sci-fi creators to get their comparisons of science fiction from around the world. If you are interested in being interviewed or know someone who would be, please comment below!

Cameron “The Pneumanaut” Armstrong

Cameron Armstrong, aka The Pneumanaut, is a Canadian writer living and working in Ireland. The son of an Evangelical pastor, Cameron’s life has been shaped by growing up in the church. It’s something he’s still working out in his artistic pursuits, as the intersections between faith and culture - particularly science fiction - hold a special fascination for him. He has written three complete novels, is working in two more, as well as written a handful of stage plays, comic books and movie scripts. When he’s not writing, you might find him acting in a local theater production, playing video games, playing or designing his own strategy games or just spending quality time with his lovely wife and two young children.

Writing Update

The final book in the Fallen series, Assumption, is going well. I’m in the detailed outline phase, which is the phase before actually writing the narrative. The stories main characters are the Sabia Berina, Esfirs, Khorsoam and humans Brendan and Alex “Air Raid” Armstrong.

As for short stories

  • The Wick in the Wind is finished. It will be published for free here on Substack in four weeks.

  • I will be expanding the very short story The Call - A Psychological Thriller into a short story based on one reader’s desire for more. That’s right, I’m not above working with fans for more. I love interaction. So don’t be a stranger.

  • The next major short story I write will come out in time for Halloween. And, of course, it will be The Savannah Paranormal Detective Agency 2.

Fellow Author Shoutout

Medusa Washes Her Face by Sierra Storm - Free Book

Three in one!

These bonus short stories from Crown of Serpents offer a uniquely humorous take on Greek Mythology... as seen from the eyes of Medusa.

"Medusa Washes Her Face" features Medusa recently brought back from the dead, grappling with her unexpected newfound life and her two sisters.

"Medusa Tells The Truth" offers a tease from Medusa's time in a human disguise, where she finds herself at odds with her invented identity and compelled to say a little too much about her life.

In "Medusa Goes to The Beach," Medusa spends her last fleeting moments as a human at a beach by herself (almost).

Paired with additional context and behind-the-scenes info from the author, these shorts can be read alone or in addition to Crown of Serpents to ramp up the fun.

Modus by Brandon Castillo - Sample of a Book

As a result of the country’s devastating civil war, the land was forced into a coastal division. It wasn't long before the East’s excessive population led desperate residents to vote for billionaire Martin Reign as their first leader. While his sixteen-year plan to decrease the population was appealing to some, it centers around taking innocent lives.

The year is now 2121. The plan has officially reached its midpoint. After finding out some horrible news, twenty-year-old Brandon Muñoz is drawn towards a risky decision. While his new life and position come with promises, his heart aches at the responsibilities he has taken.

With every action Brandon makes, he wonders, how selfish can being selfless make you?
