Sadly I never came across conspiracy nor local mythology in either of my deployments to Kandahar province. *Sigh*. I do find it interesting that the police in the story insisted their grandparents had seen them with their own eyes. The '80 years ago' part too. This would have put giants roaming the earth after, and thus during, the time that Kipling eas writing, and wrote about. Granted that his focus was India, and Afghanistan is made reference to usually as an aside (though one short story about two men traveling from India into Afghanistan, in a remote corner, to build a kingdom among a group of whote skinned natives there cones to mind) still I would think that even runors and mythos about giants would have caught his imagination and made it into one of his stories. Maybe he just never heard them, or never got to it. Or he did and I haven't read them!
Considering some of the fellow vets I know who were over there, the "giant" story would have read more like a, ahem, human tripod.
